Victoria Riverside, Manchester

Client: CR Construction (U.K.) | Location: Manchester | Value: £1 billion

Victoria Riverside is a landmark, mixed-use residential development and will be one of the first major sites to be brought forward as part of the Victoria North masterplan – a £1bn joint venture between Far East Consortium (FEC) and Manchester City Council

The development includes a landmark 37-storey building, known as Crown View, as well as two sister towers, Park View (26-storeys) and City View (18-storeys). Structurally, the building frames are formed of in-situ reinforced concrete, with post-tensioned concrete flat floor slabs within the high-rise towers. The substructure is combination of piled foundations and ground bearing raft foundations founded in the underlying sandstone bedrock. The River Irk runs north of the development with railway lines connecting to Manchester Victoria station, to the south.

Rubix Consulting provided a temporary works design and checking service on behalf of the main contractor, CR Construction (U.K.) Limited. Rubix’s initial involvement was carrying out Category 3 Design Checks of the foundations for the tower crane, concrete placing boom and hoists. As the concrete frame progressed, Rubix checked the frame contractor’s formwork and falsework proposals as well as the overall back-propping philosophy. Other temporary works highlights included assessing the concrete floor slabs for loads from construction plant such as spider cranes and advising the site team accordingly.
